Overview
PP (Polypropylene) film is one of the four core flexible packaging substrates together with PE, PET and PA films. Manufactured from polypropylene resin via casting or biaxial stretching processes, it features lightweight texture, great heat resistance, high gloss and excellent moisture barrier. It is split into BOPP, CPP and functional modified grades, widely used for outer printing layers or heat-sealing inner layers of composite packaging for global export food, cosmetic, electronic and agricultural industries.
1. Core Properties of PP Film
PP film owns unique comprehensive performance that distinguishes it from PE, PET and PA packaging films:
- Light weight & high rigidity: Low density reduces packaging cost, with stiff texture and over 90% light transmittance for bright, high-definition printing effect.
- Superior heat & moisture resistance: Stable under 120°C high temperature, fit for heat sealing and retort cooking; outstanding water vapor barrier protects goods from damp deterioration.
- Stable chemical inertness: Resistant to acid, alkali, grease and daily solvents, hard to corrode or age for long-term storage packaging.
- Food-safe & recyclable: Pure PP raw material is non-toxic and odorless, fully compliant with EU, FDA and Southeast Asia food contact standards, and fully recyclable for eco-friendly packaging demands.
Minor limitation: Ordinary PP has weak oxygen barrier and poor low-temperature toughness; customized modification can upgrade its performance for special usage.
2. Main Types & Packaging Positioning
PP film is divided into two mainstream packaging grades with clear positioning in multi-layer composite structures:
- BOPP Film: Non heat-sealable outer printing layer, high gloss and rigidity, ideal for snack, tea and cosmetic surface lamination to display brand patterns attractively.
- CPP Film: Heat-sealable inner layer, soft and tough, including retort-grade CPP for high-temperature cooked food vacuum packaging.
Classic composite matching structures: BOPP + PE for general dry goods; BOPP + CPP for high-temperature food packaging, combining beautiful printing and tight sealing performance.
3. Typical Application Scenarios
PP film covers packaging, electronics, medical and agricultural fields with adjustable functional performance:
- Food packaging: Snacks, candies, tea, braised retort food, vacuum fresh-keeping pouches
- Daily chemical packaging: Shampoo sachets, skincare mask outer packaging and cosmetic composite bags
- Electronic & industrial packaging: Cable insulation film, hardware dust-proof protective film, anti-static component wrapping
- Agricultural & civil use: Fruit and vegetable fresh-keeping bags, greenhouse covering film and laminating film
